As most of you know, my husband lost his job last year, which means that vacation was not in the cards for us this summer. But just because we aren't going away doesn't mean we can't have a vacation! This summer, we are having a stay-cation and being tourists in our own city. Here's my top tips!
1. Find something new.
There has to be something in your city that you haven't experienced. Is it a new restaurant? A new museum? A new neighborhood? Is there something in your city that you just haven't experienced before? Isn't that why we love traveling anyways? So we can experience new things and step out of our comfort zone? Go after that thing!
2. Take lots of pictures.
There's a reason that tourists are stereotyped as having big cameras around their necks. When you're in a new place, you want to capture all the sights. Being a local, you lose some of that wonder. So bring your camera and see your city with new eyes!
3. Fall for the tourist traps.
Hey, there's a reason tourists love these places, right?! Every city has that one place where people roll their eyes as they walk past a long line of tourists being suckered. But why not join in and see what the fuss is all about? The Inner Harbor is the biggest tourist trap in Baltimore, but there's something really fun about hanging out with tourists all day. I love their excitement. It inspires me to be more excited about my own city!
4. Buy a souvenir.
You wouldn't travel to a new city and not buy a little memento, would you? So go ahead and do it in your own city. Whether it's a pressed penny, t-shirt, key chain or postcard, go ahead and get a little something for your "trip" to the city. It'll help you remember that one time you decided to be a tourist in your own city!
5. Be prepared and stay hydrated.
If you're going to be walking around your city all day, you're going to need to be prepared. My number one tip for being a tourist in your own city in the summer is being hydrated. A lot of times we are dehydrated and we don't even know it. And if you're going to be walking around in the sun all day, you're not going to last very long.
I always love to stop at CVS because it's so convenient. Plus, there is one right in our city! smartwater is the perfect way to stay hyrdrated while walking around the city all day.

I also like to pick up a vitaminwater because sometimes, I love having something a little sweeter to hydrate me when I'm walking around all day. Plus, the vitamin C, caffeine and electrolytes don't hurt either!
Besides staying hydrated, you want to make sure you have some other essentials like your camera, sunglasses, quarters and pennies for creating smashed pennies souvenirs, bobby pins (hair tends to not cooperate on hot days!) and some guide maps to your city.
What's your favorite way to stay hydrated this summer?
