100 Tips for Going Vegan

Going vegan can be hard. Sometimes, you want to quit, or maybe you just have no idea how to cook vegan. I've been eating vegan for a year, and I even slip up sometimes. But at the end of the day, I know this is the lifestyle I want. So here's my 100 tips for STAYING vegan! 

  1. Figure out WHY you want to go vegan. Hold onto that. It will get your through. 
  2. Slowly cut animal products out of your life. Start with whatever is easiest. 
  3. Cut something new out each week
  4. Surround yourself with vegan inspiration. 
  5. Eating out will be the hardest.  Don't let this get you down. 
  6. Happy Cow is a fantastic app that will show you where vegan and vegetarian restaurants are near you. 
  7. Pretty much everything you enjoy now can be made vegan! 
  8. Don't focus on what you can't have, but focus on all the delicious food you CAN have. 
  9. Watch "What I Ate Today" videos of other vegans on YouTube to stay motivated. 
  10. Read vegan books. 
  11. And watch documentaries. 
  12. Find other reasons going vegan is an amazing choice- health benefits, helps the environment, cheaper, etc. 
  13. Surround yourself with positivity. Don't let the haters get you down. 
  14. Going to a party? Bring your own vegan dish instead of sitting in the corner hungry all night!
  15. If you're at a restaurant and can't find anything vegan to eat, get a salad and french fries- a true vegan staple in a pinch. 
  16. Nutritional yeast is going to be your buddy when making vegan macaroni and cheese. 
  17. EAT YOUR VEGGIES! You cannot go vegan and not eat veggies. 
  18. Do your research before you start. You will backslide if you don't know what to eat. 
  19. Smoothies are a vegan's best friend. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert! 
  20. Frozen bananas in a blender is the BEST alternative to ice cream! 
  21. Eat a ton of beans! They're a healthy protein for you! 
  22. Try new foods. Being vegan gives you so many chances to be adventurous. 
  23. Read labels. ALL THE TIME. Some of the weirdest things have animal products. 
  24. Get ready for more home cooked meals. Eating vegan will make you fall in love with cooking. 
  25. Use your slow cooker or crock pot to make amazing vegan soups, stews, and chili! 
  26. Baked potatoes loaded with rice, beans, corns and veggies is an amazing, quick dinner! 
  27. Oatmeal is the best vegan breakfast, in my opinion. 
  28. Mexican places are almost always the easiest place to eat out. 
  29. Quinoa is vegan, healthy and packs in a TON of protein. 
  30. Try to eat all the different colors! 
  31. When baking, don't use an egg- use a FLAX EGG. Mix 2.5 TBSP of ground flax seed with 1 TBSP of water. Mix and set in the fridge for 5-15 minutes. It will turn into the consistency of an egg and hold together your baking. Plus, it's healthier than an egg! 
  32. Almond milk is a fantastic milk substitute. 
  33. If you're out at a pizza place and they don't have vegan cheese, order a pizza without cheese and load it up with veggies! YUM! 
  34. Making veggie burgers is the easiest and tastiest vegan dinner in the world! 
  35. Don't be afraid to ask a restaurant if they have vegan options. 
  36. If you don't have any vegan options at all, eating vegetarian is better than nothing. 
  37. Carry vegan snacks with you. My favorites are nuts, fruit, popcorn, pretzels and granola bars.
  38. Order a bunch of sides and put together your own meal if you can't find anything vegan. 
  39. Indian restaurants are also usually vegan! 
  40. Eat a HUGE salad for an easy dinner. Throw some beans or tofu on there! 
  41. Vegan food is very easy to meal prep! 
  42. Buy frozen veggies. The difference between frozen and fresh isn't incredibly significant, and you'll always have your freezer stocked. 
  43. Use tofu as a sub for meat or scrambled eggs. 
  44. Or buy any of the fake meat products on the market. There are so many. I really enjoy Gardein!
  45. Wal-mart sells vegan mayo.
  46. If someone criticizes you or looks down on you, it's never worth it to argue with them. Just remain calm. 
  47. Invite others to try your delicious vegan food. You'll be an inspiration to others. 
  48. Download the Forks Over Knives app. There are a TON of recipes. 
  49. Hummus is a fantastic spread for sandwiches and will give you protein! 
  50. Embrace the avocado. 
  51. Use the Is It Vegan? app on your phone to find out if your product is vegan. 
  52. You do NOT have to shop only at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's to grocery shop as a vegan. I shop at Wal-Mart and Aldi 
  53. Look up which celebrities are vegan. Sometimes, it helps to know that others are doing it too! 
  54. In fact, look up vegan blogs and get connected with other vegans. It helps to have support. 
  55. It takes time for your taste buds to adjust to all this. Give yourself time. Have grace. 
  56. Use Earth Balance as an easy vegan butter substitute. 
  57. Forget what you know about "normal" eating. Meat is no longer the star of your plate. Now, veggies and healthy carbs are! 
  58. Going along with that, there is no normal breakfast or dinner. Want a baked potato for breakfast? Go for it! 
  59. Avoid frozen dinner vegan food. Just because it's vegan doesn't mean it's healthy. Have some vegan chicken tenders or meatballs, but in moderation!
  60. Speaking of meatballs, eggplant is a great sub for meat when making meatballs! 
  61. Pasta and sauce is a great quick dinner or lunch! 
  62. Don't judge others for eating meat or animal products. What is best for you may not be best for them. We're all on different paths. No one ever became vegan because someone judgingly yelled at them for eating meat. 
  63. Make a list of your favorite meals or meals you want to try. And then think about what you need to sub to make it vegan. You'd be surprised how easy it is to veganize things! 
  64. Check your makeup and household products to make sure they weren't tested on animals or contain animal products. You would be surprised. 
  65. Research what animals go through at factory farms, dairy farms, hatcheries, fish farms, etc. You won't be able to forget why you're eating this way after reading up on it. 
  66. Visit an animal sanctuary- or volunteer at one if you can! It'll motivate you more than ever. 
  67. Stand strong and do what you feel is right, even if you're alone. Stay true to yourself. 
  68. Buy fruits and veggies in season. 
  69. Buy rice and grains in bulk to save money. 
  70. Invest in a ton of different spices so you can switch up your meals! 
  71. Focus on your health too. You'll feel the health benefits as long as you aren't just eating vegan junk food. 
  72. Vegans love dates. Not romantic dates...the fruit! They're a nice caramel flavor- awesome in smoothies and banana ice cream!
  73. Vegans love kale. Pour some lemon juice on it to take away the bitter taste. 
  74. Cashews, water, lemon juice and salt make for great cashew cream. 
  75. Hot for food and The Plant Strong Vegan are two amazing vegan blogs with tons of recipes. 
  76. Chips and salsa, trail mix, popcorn (with vegan butter), guacamole, carrots and hummus, apples and peanut butter-- these are all fantastic vegan snacks!
  77. Use avocado instead of mayo. 
  78. The less ingredients a product has, the more whole-food it is, and therefore, the healthier (usually) it tends to be! 
  79. Watch out for too much soy. Tofu, vegan cheeses, meat substitutes- these are all filled with soy which can be bad to your health. Focus on some whole foods like beans, oats and rice to replace meat! 
  80. PB&J is vegan. Boom. Done.
  81. Don't expect your vegan substitutes to taste like the real thing. They will taste different, and some of it is an acquired taste, but hang in there! It really isn't so bad! 
  82. Use veggie stock instead of chicken or meat stock when making soups. 
  83. Find vegan inspiration on Pinterest if you are feeling defeated. Check out my vegan board! 
  84. Put wilted greens into a bowl of cold water with some lemon juice. Put it in the fridge and watch it come back to life! 
  85. 400 calories of meat will only fill your stomach up 1/3 of the way. 400 calories of veggies will fill your stomach up 100% of the way. Eat up! 
  86. Gelatin is NOT vegan. It contains ground up pig and horse hooves. Now that you know what is in it, you won't miss it anyways! 
  87. Only 2.5% of the United States' population is vegan. Consider yourself one of a kind. It's hard to work alone sometimes. Don't give up! 
  88. Add vinegar to almond or soy milk to create butter milk. 
  89. Use a banana or apple sauce instead of an egg in baking. 
  90. Refrigerate coconut milk overnight and whip it in the morning for some vegan whipped cream.
  91. Crescent dinner rolls and Oreos are vegan. You're welcome. 
  92. Use maple syrup instead of honey. 
  93. Buddha bowls are your new best friend. Google it. 
  94. There's a ton of info on Google and Pinterest about vegan cooking, tips, substitutes, etc. You just have to look! 
  95. Portobello mushrooms are a fantastic, whole food meat substitute! 
  96. Most Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks have non-dairy milk. Just get your latte with coconut or almond milk! 
  97. Target and Wal-mart usually sell dairy-free ice cream. 
  98. Take a multi-vitamin (this goes for everyone!) 
  99. Drink water with lemon to help you detox the toxins out of your body when going from meat-eating to vegan. 
  100. If you mess up, don't sweat it. By going vegan, you are saving hundreds of animals from a painful death. By going vegan, you are ahead of the curve. Sometimes, you slip up and accidentally, or in a moment of weakness, eat something that goes against what you believe. But guess what? Tomorrow is a new day. Don't be hard on yourself.
